Drank this blind and assumed it was from an established wine maker from the cote de Nuits. Yet again a Spätburgunder GG surprises me....massive perfume nose, velvety mouthfeel, complex flavours.
Smooth Operator. Smells smoky, earthy, oaky, very subtle fruit in the nose. As soon as it hits the palate the fruit takes over: strawberry, raspberry and cherry explosion. Vanilla is there too. So carefully balanced. A true jackpot ✨

From 60+ years old vines on a soil consisting of light loess on top of volcanic pebbles mixed with a great deal of limestone pebbles. Sunny exposition. Wines from this plot tend to be subtle and elegant. Smoky notes at first, then black cherries, red cherries, raspberries, and distant impression of forest floor, elegant yet present tannins, ripe cherry acidity, smoky notes again, some herbs… complex, no powerhouse, true finesse.

Spectacular. Pale garnet aspect and immensely evocative nose. Herbs (tarragon), cured meat, hint of smoke, red berries (cherry, dried cranberry), baking spices (pepper, vanilla), and a wondefully enticing saline finish. The acidity and alcohol are high but beautifully integrated into the whole. Pinot noir (in this instance Spätburgunder) is a many splendored creature.

Dark cherry nose and in the palate with a glorious, smooth oaky finish. Smooth and full bodied, the 2018 is an excellent expression of Spätburgunder especially in comparison with the 2017. The ruby color fades to golden at the edge of the glass. Extraordinary Pinot Noir can hang with Sonoma and Burgundy Pinots. Climate change is real.

Drinking very Burgundian! Earthy on the nose, some strawberry and cherry as well. Tannins beautifully integrated and a nice round acidity. So good!
A powerhouse in his own right. Dark ruby. Ethereal nose. Beautiful concentrated fruit, mostly raspberry and plum. Good mineral backbone, smokey. Intensely fresh and effortlessly elegant.
Phantasic, serious Pinot Noir. Powerful and elegant, Spicy, with loads of good integrated tannins and a very solid acid structure. Beeing 11 years in the bottle now, this wine is now ready for some fun. Still not totally silky, with some smooth edges, very interesting.... In my opinon amazing stuff. 2016 in der Nase, sehr würzig, Kräuter auf feinem Holz und dunkle Kirschen. Am Gaumen, aahh wie der den Hals runterrinnt, herrlich. Voller Stoff und dennnoch "elegant". Schön ausgewogen in Frucht und rundem Tannin in der frischen Säure... (19/20) so kann Spätburgunder....
Wow...rubinrød. Stor PN næse med er lille animalsk touch. Smagen kompleks, dyb og lang. Skovbær, lille bitte smugle egetræ/fad (delikat), men frisk og rank med fantastisk syre ... hvis der stadig er nogle, der mener, at der ikke laves super PN i Tyskland har de ikke smagt denne... eneste anke prisen, der også minder om god bourgogne 😖

Top German pinot noir
Kräftiger, aromatisch intensiver Pinot vom Vulkanverwitterungsboden des Winklerbergs. In der Nase dunkle Kirsche, Brombeere, etwas Rauch und feine Gewürze. Am Gaumen samtig, dicht, mit reifen, feinkörnigen Tanninen und eleganter Holznote. Der Wein trägt die Wärme der Lage, bleibt aber stets präzise und frisch. Fazit: Ein beeindruckend balancierter Spätburgunder – reif, sinnlich und trotzdem strukturiert. Der „südlichste“ unter Hegers GGs, mit Tiefe und Samtigkeit.

Criminally underrated German grand cru and stunning value (got this for 50 € back then and current vintages are not much more expensive - eat that, Burgundy). Wonderful wine, threading the dead bottles in my recycling bin, like Vergil in hell. Aromas of mad barrelled floral leather raspberry cherry Worcestershire sauce - palate deals a lesson in wrestling that awkward balance of (insert all wine variables) onto a palate tightrope, a razors edge of perfect pitch mixed metaphor viticulture - it’s that good. A palate journey to die for. Would give it 5 if I trusted my nose wasn’t post-cold ravenous.
London meet-up with @[1|32660792|LubosV] and the gang, 5 of 8 - A lovely GG Shp8 to demonstrate why this is one of the most undervalued styles of wine in the world. Elegant and expressive at 10Y of age. Even better, given 2016 was a warm vintage. Showing raspberry, wild strawberry, beetroot - always the Shp8 tell for me - plus a ferrous note of iron, luncheon meat and rotting leaves. Superb food pair. Take that Burgundy! 2016 Weingut Dr. Heger Schlossberg Achkarren Spätburgunder GG. You shouldn't have a doubt to buy a box of this wine when you find it! Muuuch better than other normal Burgundy Pinot Noirs! Too delicious! Deep and rich berries nose with full-bodied fruits on the palate. Damn good. Baden Spätburgunder is LOVE. Tasted in 2021 Jul.

Top wijn van top terroir uit een prima jaar! Vulkanisch gesteente geeft power en diepgang. Rood en zwart fruit cocktail, aarde, bosvloer, smokey, vuursteen, paddestoel, Earl Grey. Geweldige balans in rijkdom, verfijning, zuren en tannine. Mineraliteit ten top, souplesse en diepgang, prachtige lengte en gelaagdheid. Lange, zinderende finale. Heel mooi gemaakt, 1 van de mooiste Spätburgunders geproefd in '18!
94 pinot fra vulkanen. Det smager tossegodt, vulkan eller ej. Lidt mørkere i udtrykket end meget andet fra Baden. Blåbær, brombær, vanille, røg. Saftig pirrende smag med langt dvælende krydderi i eftersmagen.
Offene Nase mit sehr viel dunklem Toasting und schwarzen Kirschen. Am Gaumen sehr straff, viel Säure, viel herbe Röstaromen. Schon eindrücklich, aber wird mit 2-3 Jahren Flaschenreife sicher noch zulegen.

Stunning bottle of spätburgunder! Very Aromatic and fresh. Red berries, predominantly strawberry and raspberry. Some forrest underbush and dried flowers. It has some punch to it. Not like the few späts I’ve tried. Very very nice. Long finish.

Een machtige Spatburgunder uit 2012. Een ware bek vol wijn met veel rood fruit op de voorgrond en wat cederhout, tabak en leer op de achtergrond en mooie rijpe tanninen. De afdronk is ellenlang. Al met al een tongstrelende top wijn! Gedronken bij een stukje reerug in restaurant Der Schwarze Adler in Vogtsburg, waar de wijn vandaan komt.

Delicshhhh! Etwas viel Holz, darunter allerdings Herzkirsche, gebratene Zwiebel, Ziegel. Schon typisch badisch. Im Glas super balanciert, weich mit Frucht und vor allem viel erdiger Aromatik. Etwas Holz, etwas Grip, etwas old skool, aber trotzdem super lecker. 92P
A visit to Weinhaus Heger in the the Kaiserstuhl region (Ihringen, Germany). We bought a bottle of this GG to enjoy on our travels, enjoyed in the Alps in Switzerland. Deep crimson. Nose of red fruit and pepper. Dry, medium+ body, viscous body, medium acidity, light tannins. Nice fruity palate with strawberries, cranberry, oak, forest litter. Long finish. 🏍😎

Rauchig-laktische Nase, steht für das Alter noch gut da. Leider aber schon über dem Höhepunkt drüber, wirkt schon flach am Gaumen. Trotzdem guter Wein.
10 ans ne lui font pas peur. Suave, ne pas oublier que c’est le vignoble le plus chaud d’Allemagne mais sans aucune lourdeur. Aucune prétention dans l’élevage même s’il transparait un peu.

der Wein hat mich sofort in seinen Bann gezogen 👃tolle Kirsch- und süße Pflaumennote, unterfüttert mit Rauch und Graphit, schöne Fruchtsüße und einer Majoran-Note im Geruchsfinale -spannend und toll 👄am Gaumen geschmeidig, tolles samtiges Tannin, feine ausdrucksstarke Säure, rote Früchte mit eine Spritzer Orange und vor allem eine Himbeere die sich bis in den Abgang hält 👍👏schöner Wein!!

Tolles GG Spätburgunder von Heger. Helle Beeren - Tabak - Holz - etwas Joghurt. Am Gaumen elegant und leicht - fehlt etwas die Komplexität und der Abgang. Vielleicht war das vor 5 Jahren noch präsenter.
Danse ruby-red color in the glass! On the nose roasted coffee and stewed figs, peony and malt! On the palate very supple with melted tannins that still build up pressure, herbaceous and almost medicinal on the finish! Cheers!

Wonderful, I mean wonderful nose of light red fruit, sand, leaves, caramel and a touch of wood. Bery soft Pinot Noir but it has a touch too much wood on the palate. Other than that it is precise, well made, and delicious 4.2
Vin Amok, xmas 2016: 93+. First red was this truly interesting Spatburgunder GG, limit of 600 bottles. Vines are planted back in 1956 and grafted with Clos Vougeot cuttings. Delicate, smooth and intense. Very juicy almost without acidity, which I see as this well made wine's biggest obstacle. Light a match, roasted oak and Ripe red berries all the way.
4.2- very concentrated, kirsch type flavours. Salinity. Gentle even for a warm year and still elegant. Not overriped although fruity.

I have allowed this 2012 Dr. Heger to naturaly"breathed" for 3 hours. Floral and red fruit nose go hand in hand with earth tone and mineral; slight scent of mint is spotted. A very balanced pinot with long after taste. Nicely made old world pinot worth cellaring.

The 2018 Ihringer Spätburgunder from Dr. Heger is a very well-made, high quality Ortswein - and with a pricetag of just 17€/bottle it's punching well above its weight-class. 100% Spätburgunder with grapes coming exclusively from Erste and Große Lage vineyards. Deep Spätburgunder nose. 2016 opened in 2021. Multi layered berry burst, metallic notes, acidity (and alcohol!) tinge the nose. Palate seems either a tad over its plateau, or —with this storied vigneron— more likely still 3-7yrs pre. Lacks some vibrancy and ballerina flexibility. Higher tannins SB. Volcanic soil is partly guilty for the rougher edges. Nonetheless enjoyable artisanal glass of high quality Spätburgunder. Give it time to open up.

Very good quality of wine. Can drink now, suitable for aging.
Awesome PN! Light in color but not in taste. Quite complex with oak, cherry, vanilla and tobacco. I am used to German PNs being more on the fruity side, but not this one! A bit expensive but worth a splurge.

Der Wein ist schön, sehr vordergründig in der Säure Glatt etwas zu viel Aber dennoch trinkig, wenig tannin, das tannin das da ist schön fein Ingesamt enorm auf der Sauerkirsch Stilistik laufend Kein völlig außergewöhnlicher Wein; aber für 16€ echt schön. Und ich glaube der hätte noch deutlich Reifepotenzial gehabt Tag drei: sehr schön aufgemacht, jetzt nochmal komplexer

Sehr helles, klares Rubinrot, zum Rand hin nahezu farblos auslaufend. In der Nase erdige Würze, Pilze und etwas Nelke. Am Gaumen recht glatt mit deutlicher Fokussierung auf einer retronasalen Aromatik, hinter deren säuregestützter Front nur wie von Ferne etwas hellrote Frucht aufscheint. Kompromisslos gut.
Mooie diepe Spätburgunder kleur. Vol en intens, zwoel vanille-achtig, ietwat kruidig, bouquet met rijper bessen, ietwat rokerig. In mond pittige zuren, wat chocolade, een pepertje, rood en rijp fruit. Prachtig aanhoudende nadronk. Prachtige prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding.
Deze wijn is helemaal mijn stijl. Echt top. Ruikt fantastisch. Aardbeitjes, kers met een vleugje paddenstoel. Niet zo aards en bossig als ze kunnen zijn. Ook wat peperig. Sappige aanzet. Voller in afdronk. Tannines zacht en keurig in balans. Frisse zuren, fris fruit. En wijn met een pitje, met mineralen, met kaneel met de bekende bakspecerijen. Een beetje hout. Later voller met rijpe kers. Hele fijne wijn. Zalig.

De fraai lichtrode wijn heeft een plezierige geur van rode kersen, bosaardbeien, grafiet, basilicum, cassis, natte potgrond en wat muntblad. Im Aroma eher dezent, am Gaumen jedoch mit einer schönen dunkelfruchtigen Würze und animierender Säure. Kein Komplexitäts- oder Längenwunder, jedoch ein hervorragender „Alltags-Pinot“ mit burgundischem Anklang und großem Trinkfluss. Allround-Speisenbegleiter mit gutem PLV. (2018er in 11/2023 an zwei Abenden verkostet; 16,60€; 13,5%)
Nie im leben wäre ich auf Pinot aus Baden gekommen. Relativ breit, in der Josephine zu viel Butter. Im Zalto universal besser, Hagebutte, rote Frucht. 👍 Kühl trinken, dann kommt auch eine leichte Kräutrigkeit durch.

Elegant vin der formår at kombinere det lette udtryk med en mellemfyldig krop. Skal nok ikke serveres til stærkt krydrede retter, men er ellers en glimrende madvin. Rød frugt og fad er styrende for både duft og smag, men der er også subtile noter af peber.
Klassische spätburgunder Farbe. In der Nase ausgewogene Vanillenoten, leicht fein rauchiges Aroma mit blumigen Noten. Auf dem Gaumen feiner Schmelz gute Struktur Beeren mit feines Säurespiel, sehr schön ausbalanciert. Im Abgang fein und geschmeidig lang. Trinkfertig aber noch mit viel Potential. Für mich ein sehr eleganter Wein und im direkten Vergleich überzeugt mich die Ortsweinqualität (2018) deutlich mehr als der Spätburgunder GG „Vordere Winklerberg 2018“.

Raspberries, wild strawberries, lingonberries, minerality and (after some time in the glass) coffee and pinewood. I like he sharp attitude here, high acidity and a lot of read berries. Easy, complex, juicy. What’s not to like?

Mittleres Granatrot. Mittlere Intensität in der Nase. Im Gaumen trocken, rassige Säure, intensiv Aromatik mit Zedernholz, etwas Primärfrucht, leicht reduktive Aromen, milde Tannine, voller Körper. Der Wein brilliert mit unglaublich und unerwarterter Eleganz und Finesse!! Blind hätte ich auf Burgund getippt! Abstriche in der Komplexität und Primärfrucht!

A terraced, southwest-facing section of the Winklerberg on volcanic soil. Wow! A kicked-up nose coming from the wine simply named "Winklerberg." Same intensity of black fruit with an additional notch of crushed spices and dried flowers. Quite a lot of power on the nose also, which leads to a full, rich and intense palate, showing a touch of new oak. ***++
A very warm Smokey big Pinot. It’s profile is not hot but rather big and bold. I believe this is made from vulcanite soil and with pressing down the cap and other techniques to extraction. Acting very young I’ll hide the last bottle several years

Bricklike colour and white rim. On the nose one finds dried fruit, sweet strawberry, raspberry and similar on the palate. The wine is okay, but extremely short and with a low intensity on the nose it was not a favorite. Had it at a spätburgunder tasting.
Wine Barn walkaround. 3y4m. Rough notes only. C: Pale garnet. N: Med intense smoke, earthy violet, flowers, black fruits, strong cedar, green herbs. Med- clarity, med complexity. P: Black fruits -> earthy green herbs, minerals, flowers -> blackcurrant & tree bark finish. Med+ finish, high conc, med- bod, high acid, med+ rough tannins. Quite complex on the palate, slightly bitter finish. This was actually pretty good but too expensive for the quality. Drink now to 2026. 88p.
Actually I am not familiar with Germany Pinot Noir, still give a try. Fruit forwards, lots of cherry, herbs, liquorice, smoke. Medium finish. Not bad, yet compared with Bourgogne, I will say the price not justified enough.

Germania, pinot nero, 13,5 gradi. Colore rubino. interessante ma non eccezionale. Mineralita' forte, lungo ma poco bilanciato, stringente l'acidità in gola.
